What are my state requirements?
Food safety requirements vary by state, and often by county or city too. Which training or certification you need depends on where you work and what your role is. This article explains the main types of requirements and how to find the rules for your area.
Find your state’s requirements
Visit our State Requirements page, then choose your state from the dropdown or click it on the map. Every state and Washington, D.C. has its own section covering:
- Food Handler: whether food handler training is required, and whether Trust20’s Food Handler Certificate Training is accepted
- Food Allergy: whether allergen awareness training is required
- Food Manager: what your state requires for a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM)
The main types of requirements
- Food Handler training is for frontline staff who prepare, serve or handle food. Some states require it, and others leave it to employers or local health departments.
- Food Manager certification (CFPM) is required in most states for at least one person in charge at a food establishment. To become certified, you must pass an ANAB-accredited exam. Trust20’s CFPM exam is ANAB-accredited.
- Food Allergy training is required in a few states and cities, and some employers require it even where the law doesn’t.
Important: Food Manager Training is not the same as the CFPM exam. The training prepares you, but only passing the proctored CFPM exam makes you certified. See Food Manager Training vs. CFPM exam.
Some states and counties run their own programs
A few states and local health departments only accept their own food handler training or cards, so a Trust20 Food Handler certificate won’t meet their requirements. Your state’s section on the State Requirements page will tell you if this applies to you.
